Ladies for Life

A conscience here, a conscience there…

Posted on: September 16, 2009

A few weeks ago, we decided to stock fetal models in our gas station cum bookstore. The ones we ordered represent a boy about 11 to 12 weeks into this adventure of Earthly life, and come with an information card, stating when the heart starts beating, that sort of thing. We’ve packaged them in little plastic bags, and put them in a heart shaped wicker basket near, but not on, the check-out counter.

Many people don’t notice them, and others see them and smile. But we’re getting some other reactions, too. (We expected this. The main point, after all, is to gently confront abortion supporters with what it is they’re advocating killing and throwing away. All too many of them would rather pretend all that really matters is “The Right to Choose” – as if choosing to destroy another human being is all right if it seems to serve a purpose.)

So, anyway, I’ve missed the fireworks that have happened so far (smiles I’ve seen, slight uneasiness I’ve seen, fireworks no), but the reports I’m getting from my co-workers are interesting.

The most dramatic: we had one couple where the woman was thoughtfully measuring the fetus against the length of her finger (who knows why) and the man came up to see what she was handling. The man, upon realizing what it was, backed off, and then ran from the building, whimpering and moaning.

If there are any gentlemen reading this, I hope I don’t need to tell you that this is not necessarily a prime example of manliness at its best.

Be that as it may, I’d have to guess the man was running more from himself than from an itty bitty doll. Or, more accurately, he was probably trying to run from himself. (It never works, but people keep trying, don’t they?)

But what do I know? Perhaps it was a father still reeling from losing a son or daughter to miscarriage? We doubt it. But since he wasn’t having anything to do with people – and since he needs God to help him deal with either guilt or grief, we must, at this point, leave him and his horror to God, I guess. (Add him to your prayer list if you like. I don’t know his name, but God does, of course.)

Another example: the other night, a man picked up one of the packages and studied the doll for a while. Then he turned the package over and was reading the card. Bam. Some information on the card burned him – or, at least, something made him drop the doll back into the basket as if he’d been burned by it. He didn’t run from the building, but he was rather uncomfortable about being near that basket, and he sure didn’t want to talk about it.

As a Christian, I am obliged to say that if you’ve had anything to do with an abortion, you can receive forgiveness and a fresh start if you repent.

I am also obliged to say that abortion is premeditated murder, and there’s no excuse for it. It’s also one of the deadly sins: if you don’t repent, the consequences are eternal, and too horrible to contemplate.

Something tells me that the above-mentioned men are starting to get the picture. I hope so, at any rate, for their sake as well as for the sake of any unborn child who might be dependent on their mercy and protection in the future.

There’s no undoing a feticide, but perhaps this teeny dose of reality made tangible in these models will help soften a few hearts that have hardened enough to consider (or even conduct) murder of the defenseless.

One conscience at a time, ladies. One conscience at a time…
